Violence Prevention and Response for Ambulatory Staff
Essential, easy-to-use skills to identify, respond to, and reduce your risk of violence.
Designed For You
If you work at a medical office, urgent care clinic, outpatient surgical center, or another ambulatory/outpatient setting, this course is designed specifically for you, your environment, and its challenges.
Ask yourself these three questions right now:
What are your options to de-escalate someone who starts yelling and threatening staff?
How would you handle a threatening patient phone call? Should you call the police?
What can you do to keep yourself safe if things turn to physical violence?
These are difficult questions to answer and there's not just one right answer. Having options for response is key. However, once you're already in a situation, it's too late to answer these questions. Proper training before an incident happens is one of the best ways to help prevent, mitigate and respond to violence.
Why You Need This Course
Whether you are a practice administrator, a clinician, or a support staff person working in an ambulatory setting, it's important that you have the knowledge and tools to keep yourself and others safe in the workplace. Think about this course as adding tools to your toolbox of options for recognizing, responding to, and mitigating violence.
Violence in healthcare can take many forms, including verbal aggression, physical assault, threats, stalking, harassment, domestic violence and more. It is absolutely essential that you not only know the signs of potential aggression, but also what to do if a patient, visitor or someone else starts escalating in your practice.
You owe it to yourself, your co-workers and the patients you serve to provide the safest, most secure care environment possible.
Your Setting = Unique Challenges
This course will cover all of the essential information, techniques and tips to help keep yourself and others safe from violence. The curriculum is designed specifically for clinical staff and support staff working in an ambulatory/outpatient site setting.
Unlike a large or community hospital setting, ambulatory and outpatient sites have less resources at hand to manage safety, security and violence. Typically, there is no security staff at these sites and practice staff must deal with security and violence related situations as they arise.
Without the proper training and skill sets, staff in a practice can unwittingly miss danger signs or fail to respond properly to an escalating patient. This course will arm you with lessons that you can immediately apply on a daily basis.
Further, this course is designed with your schedule in mind. Typically, time for training in your setting is limited due to the smaller staffing numbers. There are usually competing priorities for the little training time you have. For these reasons, the course lessons are divided into short, easy to understand sections- most of which take 10 minutes or less to complete.
Because staff may be scattered across multiple sites in some situations, it is difficult to get everyone in the same room for training at the same time. That's where this course fits in perfectly. You can start this course when you have time and take your time to get it done.
